Model Ship Building/Hobby Ideas

Ship models or model ships are scale representations of ships. They can range in size from 1/6000 scale wargaming miniatures to large vessels capable of holding people. Start your ship building experience with an inexpensive project first and see if you are going to like it before you jump in with both feet.

Simplified instructions are provided with each kit and all you have to do is to assemble the parts with glue. You can’t go wrong, because the sections won’t fit except in their proper positions. There is a strange fascination in fitting these parts together which grows on you, do not jump ahead on steps to be taken. No particular tools are needed and no experience is necessary to start MSB.

Selection is so important to the modeler that I have made it applicable to all the other phases of model building. It would probably end in disaster if you started to build your own models or selected square rigged ships until you have acquired a little more knowledge of MSB. Start small at first and work your way up into bigger and more complicated ships.

Ship in a Bottle
The history of ships in bottles is the history of the two major components. Sailors on ships of all sizes and types have used scrap wood, cloth, and rope to make model or toy boats to pass long hours at sea. This model-making dates back perhaps 4,000 years.
The hobby of building ships in bottles is not for everyone. Love of research, ships and sea lore, history, woodworking and other skills, and minute details, as well as considerable patience, are required. The finished models are surprisingly durable and are treasured possessions to leave to children and grandchildren.

Please note that there are many different techniques used by different builders in creating their ship models. Some use elaborate mast hinges while others contend with a maze of rigging lines which all run through and under the hull. This book by Captain Dan Berg will teach you every aspect of building ships in a bottle, pick up your copy today. Click Book Image
